a favorite musician bio pic

Man this film gets me every time. Just watched it again on one of the movie channels. I dig the old movies about any of the swing musicians from back in the day. But every time it gets to that last scene at the club, I start my laugh/crying when his daughter asks him for a dance. Sad to hear a 300 lb old drummer balling like a baby, the neighbors called to see what was wrong. Great music, great picture. Sure it's sometimes corny, but for music lovers of swing, it's great.

I remember seeing this movie years ago on TV. Got lucky and caught it on one of the HBO stations this morning. Good bio pick. fun to watch Danny Kaye and Louis Armstrong together.

reply

Yeah, the whole movie is great and indeed the last scene made my eyes moist, too. I also can´t come up with any better music bio pic than this. Just great !!!

Marvelous movie, and a real tear-jerker. And the girl in the last scene, playing Danny's daughter is... TUESDAY WELD, if you can believe it. She was about 15 at the time this was filmed, and she was just great.

reply

:-))

Indeed, you are right ! I did not know/realize this and of course checked the staff line-up and indeed it was her 3rd or 4th movie. I have always had a crush on this type of woman and Tuesday is certainly THE cutie of the 60ies and 70ies, have always loved to see her.

Unf. she has retired from the screen, but then again, she was 58 in 2001, certainly had made enough dough to call it a day and is hopefully enjoying herself still today at 65.

Cheers to her and thanx to you for the hint (I´m gonna search my VHS of FIVE PENNIES and watch it again). :-)

You can buy "The Five Pennies" on DVD at Amazon, for about $10.99. Danny made a remark that Tuesday was "15 going on 27." He was hesitant to cast her for that reason. However, Tuesday pulled the falsies out of her blouse, and Danny cast her, as he rightly felt, that she was an excellent actress. And, she was. Cute, maybe, but did you ever see her HORRIFIC turn in "Pretty Poison?" Totally crazy, and she was fabulous. Or check out "I Walk The Line" with Gregory Peck. Excellent film, and she plays an amoral moonshiner's daughter.

Thanx for the DVD-hint! I read that it finally came out not too long ago after a few years of being in limbo. I guess I have to get it finally, after I have been "crazy" enough to buy various pressings of the OST LP (US, UK, Italy and Germany). :-))

Haha, I love that remark of "15 going on 27", didn´t know ´bout that as well as about her using "falsies" (clever, haha) these days.

Yep, she definitly was a great actress, unjustified forgotten today, definitly underrated. I have not seen all her pictures, but many of them, even some of her later TV-fare (which was constantly above average as well).

Of course I saw PRETTY POISON, I even taped it on VHS when it was aired on TV many many years ago, since I had already heard before that that this is a sleeper and I still have it. A definite picture, not easily forgotten! Terrific performance. I think I also saw WALK THE LINE, but don´t remember her or the picture anymore, it was - that´s what has stayed with me - moreless average fare.

But I do remember other of her works, like THIEF, which is a good picture where she has a small part only, but I do remember her (blonded in that one), I also liked her in CINCINNATI KID (I am a McQueen-buffa s well !), LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR, WHO´LL STOP THE RAIN (which is a msterpiece, definitly her 2nd best after PRETTY POISON !! - can´t get enough of this nihilistic Karel Reisz movie, which is more a philosophical treatment on greed than an action-movie, but works superbly on the later level as well), I saw AUTHOR! AUTHOR! (lame at best), of course ONCE UPON A TIME and FALLING DOWN, but her best from that time is most likely "Scorned and Swindled (1984)", which you should definitly try to catch a viewing !!

Which I still have not yet seen are SOLDIER IN THE RAIN (which I have to see some day also due to Steve McQueen being in it) and LORD LOVE A DUCK, which has a FANTASTIC score by the way.

Of the others I have seen some, but I think most of them are not must-sees (am I wrong)?

You named just about all of Tuesday's good ones. I would see "I Walk The Line" again, as it is Frankenheimer, and an excellent piece. Johnny Cash does the music, and it's great. But in the "The Five Pennies" Tuesday showed early that she was a wonderful actress. She is very different and offbeat, and Hollywood never knew what to do with her.

reply

>>>She is very different and offbeat, and Hollywood never knew what to do with her.<<<

How true! You nailed it. I am pretty sure she actually also didn´t want to star in so-called type-A movies, she preferred the more subtle productions, the weired ones, the ones, that STILL STAY WITH US these days, whereas lots of the expensive productions from those days just get a yawn today. She was ahead of time, in her life-style as well as in the movies she chose (thanx God :-) ).

Going through her list of movies again I realized I have also seen "Mother and Daughter: The Loving War (1980) (TV)". This one is not that great, the storyline is just so-so, but she was very good in it, as always.

I´ll check WALK THE LINE again next time it´s gonna be aired on TV here (runs every once in a while).

Tuesday did not like A-type films. However, she was about to be cast as Bonnie in "Bonnie and Clyde,'' but Warren Beatty at the last minute chose Faye Dunaway, which I feel was a HUGE mistake. Probably because Tuesday would not go to bed with him. Faye was very affected as Bonnie, and not for one minute did I believe she was the character. I felt Tuesday would have been a lot more grittier, and realistic.

reply

Yep, I have read that info, too, and am with you, I also think Tuesday would have made a better Bonnie.

The movie is a classic today, yes, but it still could have been better. Much of its reputation is due to the last scenes, the shooting of B. ´n C., but before that happens, the movie has its ups as well as its downs. Could have been better, no doubt (although some would consider this blasphemy, smile).

reply

Yes, the film could have been better, and with Tuesday in it. She would have provided a much rougher take on the character, and quite perverse. Faye, though very good, looked like a fashion model. The real Bonnie was quite petite, as is Tuesday. The movie to me is excellent, but not a classic.

reply

I can nothing other than say: 100 % agreement on all points! :-)

reply

Tuesday would have played Bonnie as a real psycho, which is what the real Bonnie was. Look at "Pretty Poison" and you can see what might have been.

reply

Yep, I know what you mean, Tuesday would have been THE best choice for this role (I know "Pretty Poison"). Faye Dunaway has moreless built her whole career on this one role in B. ´n C. and she´s still working.

This movie would have made Tuesday famous, but somehow I think she would not have wanted it this way, she said she always avoided this kinda movies.

Anyway, past is past, happily she left us a well filled handful of really good ones, which is more than a lot of so-called A-list actresses did. :-)

reply

Tuesday did NOT want to be famous, and has said that, and said she purposely avoided roles that would make her a superstar. I think she just wanted a normal life, as she started working as a very young child, and had a very bizarre life. Faye is an excellent actress, and of course is still working, as she had talent. I just feel she was not that great in "Bonnie and Clyde." Faye was much better in "Chinatown" and felt she should have won the Oscar for that. So did Faye. "Network" was good, but I felt Faye was outstanding in "Chinatown."

reply

Yep, I totally agree, CHINATOWN is a classic and all the leads are superb in it. It´s one that has to be watched a couple of times to really get all the details and it improves with every viewing. A really intelligent movie (like they hardly ever do them today anymore).

And I do understand Ms. Weld that she called it a day after having earned enough to live a happy life in retirement. Intelligent woman, because you only have to look at Robert DeNiro to see what happens, if one misses the time to retire. A ruined actor.

BTW, do you know any movies, B´s that is, by Claudia Jennings ? I have read great things about her outings before she untimely died at app. 29 in the mid 70ies, but none of her movies made it to Europe in dubbed versions, so I wonder if they are worth hunting down on DVD´s (if anything has been released on that format at all). Seen any of those "classics" like DYNAMITE CHASE, TRUCK STOP WOMEN, etc ...?
