A mystery

Interesting that the film's credits say: "From the novel by Max Catto". I have found a film edition of the novel, "Ferry to Hong Kong" in paperback published in 1958. It has artwork from the film's release on its cover, but it is not authored by Max Catto. It's by Simon Kent. A mystery! - unless Max Catto and Simon Kent are one and the same. IMDb's page on Max Catto doesn't mention FERRY TO HK. Nor do IMDb's credits for FERRY TO HK give the source novel. But the credit is definitely there on the screen at the beginning of the film - I know because I had the misfortune to watch it recently on DVD. What a waste of talent!
