Signifance of church bells?

I loved this movie, the direction, photography and acting. But the ending where the church bells ring and Monk raises his hands to the sky with jerk-like movements, I thought a miraculous healing would take place, rendering his face as it once was and of course, it wasn't. Did the bells signify to the children that Monk was not to be feared but respected? Would welcome your thoughts.

I thought the sound of the bells took him back to the night of the fire, since they were ringing all through that scene.
Maybe that brought him back to reality?
That scene wasn't in the original story. I found it online here...

I am so glad to have seen this movie after so many years. Just as good as I remember it!

Thanx so much for replying and for the link. I should have saved this movie on DVR so I could watch it again. I hadn't even remembered the church bells the night of the fire so thanks so much for reminding me and I think you're right.

The church bells are also ringing during the titles. Maybe a premonition?
A truly uplifting ending for a sad story.
Monk Johnson was a heroic figure and certainly didn't deserve the hatred of the town after his accident.

Nanafee, you answered your own question. The bells signaled a form of spiritual healing took place when the boy's fears were eliminated and there was hope the harsh prejudices of the townspeople would end..at least Monk's tortured soul was healed and softened from bitterness.
