Vertigo Connection

A year prior,Vera & Jim were to be paired in the gr.film ever:Hitchcock's Vertigo. But alas it was not to be as Vera got pregnant and had to bow out. Thus Novak comes in. However it woulda been most curious to have seen Miss Miles in her original role for if one sees the original stills,Miles was stunning ! Hitch ergo never forgives Vera for "this slight" and the rest is history. I like Kim a lot as does Truffant, but the persistence of those still shots still haunt me after seeing Vertigo 125x's.I can only dream.

Here's to you Miss Miles from a long time fan(the Outer Limits, the Searchers, etc. One special Lady who shoulda been a Super Star !

...alas

I don't think Vera Miles wouldn't have worked in "Vertigo" half as good as Kim Novak. Though more a beauty to me than Novak, Miles was too refined and would have been pressed to get across the desperate qualities of the character Novak pulled off so indelibly.

Novak apparently had a hard time with Hitchcock making the movie on account of his disappointment in her not being Miles, and channeled that into her performance wonderfully. Miles wouldn't have had that same kind of crisis to play off of, I don't think, and if Hitch had played his games with her the way he did with Novak, she wouldn't have tolerated it.

That's what went down, but I like having The FBI Story to see how Stewart and Vera Miles would have likely looked together in Vertigo -- a well-matched pair, somewhat better matched than Stewart and Novak.

3 years after The FBI Story, Miles would again be Stewart's love interest -- in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. But he looked a lot older, she seemed a lot more prim -- and John Wayne lost Vera to Stewart in that film, which didn't feel right and helped make the movie very sad.
