is the "Chicken " quote referencing something else ?

When the Sheriff describes the gangster to the guy at the canyon/construction site, he replies "There's nothing here but us chickens". As I have only heard this saying in the last 5 years, what, if anything, does that quote mean? Is it a reference to something else?

reply

It's a very old saying. Means nothing unusual here.

"I know it looked like I fell... but it was all part of my plan!"

Also can have overtones of there being nothing to fear from us. Like being called 'chicken' which implies no threat, aka 'chicken sh*ot'. Kind of schoolyard phrase so has fallen out of common usage.
Gotta admit never have seen this one but with Siegel at the lens well that's a must see.
Director: Don Siegel (as Donald Siegel)

It is referencing a popular song ,performed notably by Louis Jordan and more recently by the Muppets https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ain%27t_Nobody_Here_but_Us_Chickens

reply

I think the expression came before the song.
