Chilling depictions of hangings

Several things strike me about this film, mostly the hanging sequences. Although we never see anybody actually "drop," there is enough visual buildup of what the hanging would amount to, to really send chills up and down my back.

Another thing I admired were the clever animation sequences. They were richly done, and added a nice touch to what apparently was a low-budget movie (I guess they didn't even have enough money to shoot it in color, as was originally planned.)

I agree with the animation sequences. I think they add a kind of humour that matches with the tone of the narrator.

If I'm not mistaken the "drop" during a hanging came much later in history. At the time people were basically strangled by the rope, not dropped with the intention of breaking the neck.
