This is really an actor's movie, and Burt got the best. He must have really wanted to do this movie. As another writer commented, it wss made by his own production company.
I think you could have recast the male leads, and any one could have played any part. Each one was fully capable. But nobody did "rakish" like Kirk, and nobody could do those posh lines like Larry. And Burt, is Burt.

I liked the movie and they were all solid. But the hodge podge of accents, particuarly Burt Lancaster's, was kind of funny. Burt's accent still held his New Yawk accent, which I presume wasn't that New Yawky during the revolution.
