Puppets

I can't believe no one has brought up the puppet sequences in this movie. Ilove the movie and Burt Lancaster......what a man!! But thepuppet sequences took a lot away from the movie. Were they supposed to be Shaw's Sarcasm or what. But they seemed silly to me.

I just started watching this movie for the first time and I came right here looking for commentary on just that.

The puppets scream 'comedy' but with the subject matter at hand, I think not. Quite the juxtaposition.

Personally, I loved the puppet sequences. Very witty and tie in well with the voice over dialogue.

Much better than just having a map and arrows.

I really liked the puppet sequences too, and thought it was very effective at connecting plot points. I think the problem with this movie, is that it didn't know if it was a comedy or a drama. The puppet sequences were lighthearted, Laurence Olivier and Harry Andrews were pretty funny, and even Kirk Douglas kept it pretty light. For me it just didn't work with the completely dramatic performances by Burt Lancaster and Janette Scott as the Andersons. I liked it, but feel like it could have been much better.
