What's with TCM?

This is a classic. Why would they screw it up by showing dubbed version to take out the Irish accent? That is a big part of this movie's charm.

I was watching this on DVD when I read your post and switched it to TCM. Wow, that's bad!

I agree with you, a large part of its charm is lost.

Back to the DVD!

Sounds Irish to me; well, except Sean's accent which, of course, is Scotch.

It's the instances of the Gaelic language they dubbed. Like when the two leprechauns announce the arrival of Darby O'Gill to King Brian. Or when King Brian asks for the Stradivarius. Both case were in Gaelic in the movie originally, but were dubbed in English in the version shown on TCM. I've seen this movie many times and was disappointed to see that TCM showed the dubbed version.

If they were speaking Gaelic why would they dun it in English? Is TCM going to do that for every movie where the characters speak Spanish or French?

reply

TCM didn't do the dubbing, but they used the dubbed version of the movie, which was made for the American market when the movie was originally put on home video (back in the 80's probably.)

Also TCM is only showing what Disney gave them. I think Disney is to blame for giving them a dubbed and non-letterbox version.

reply

I thought my DVR sound was out of synch. Didn't realize it was dubbed.

TCM didn't show it widescreen. The credits ran off the sides.

reply

Are you sure? Because the version they played a few months back was indeed widescreen (1.78:1) and in HD. I was specifically looking to see if it was a cropped down version of the full frame version, and everything looked right regarding framing.

Funnily enough, Walmart and Amazon have this available in HD for download, and it is in full frame (1.33:1).

The DVD is also full screen and says 'presented as originally filmed in full screen'. The widescreen version has been matted to 1.78. And in 1959 it likely would have been matted down to 1.66 in theaters as was the norm for non-widescreen shot movies.
