Not a bad little film

Everyone seems to give this movie very poor marks. I grew up watching it every so often on TV in the 60s and mainly remembered it for the giant golf ball, or white orange, or whatever it is the alien arrives in, and while it was never one of my faves I thought it was okay. Seeing it again after many years I expected to find it poor and boring, but actually it's not so bad at all. Very low budget, of course, and the "science" in it is idiotic -- oh, there's no such thing as "gravity", instead there's a force being exerted on the Earth from space that keeps things firmly on the ground? Puh-leeze.

But despite (or because of) these things, I've found The Cosmic Man a pretty enjoyable little movie, much more so, in fact, than I ever did as a kid. It doesn't attempt more than it can afford, it's got a pretty good cast for such an inexpensive film, it takes its subject seriously, and conveys an appropriate mood of mystery. And today, it's also a nice, nostalgic throwback to the late 1950s. In its own odd way, it's aged pretty well, with a kind of earnest charm about it. It plays straight with the audience and doesn't resort to cheap thrills (maybe a little bit, when the title Man walks through the village and a couple of girls undressing for the night are frightened). The special effects scenes with the CM are a bit fake but the sequences with the golf ball are actually decently realistic (my use of the term "golf ball" notwithstanding).

Overall, it's much better than most reviewers write, and definitely worth an indulgent look. No classic, and don't expect another The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951, not the awful remake, and the "big" movie this picture is usually compared with). But it is a rather sweet and innocent film that's fun, entertaining, and even has a little something to say. Try it, in a kind spirit.

Most of these actors were probably glad to take a break from smaller parts in A Movies(when they could get them). The acting in most of these genre movies would seem to be surprising good for first time, perhaps even cynical viewers.

Most actors have to take the parts they're offered, since most of them have little choice, but true professionals do what they can with the parts they get. Any actor who simply "phones it in" on any picture -- maybe especially "little" ones -- is cheating his audience. No matter what the role, a performer owes the viewer his best. I think the people in this film, and others like it, were pros who might not have liked having to do such low-budget movies, but gave it their all because that was their training. The funny thing is, it's these little movies that have remained so popular, while many of the "bigger" ones have sunk into obscurity.

Lansing54, I think you hit on just the right description of TCM. (Ironic initials!) "Kinder, gentler, healing"...especially the last. That's just the tone of this film, but I would never have thought of it in precisely that way. You really caught the essence of the picture's tenor as well as its message. A very good and thoughtful observation.

Me too, and as I said, an insightful observation.

Oh, indeed! While watching this several years ago, at the end when the kid bids his tearful good-bye to the CM, as the theme music swelled up I suddenly thought of dreadful lyrics to fit the sequence (well, two lines at least): "We love you, Cosmic Man/You've helped us all you can." Unfortunately I've never gotten these dopey words out of my head! They do fit the tune. Maybe there's a germ of a Broadway musical adapation there. "Cosmic!" The Musical.

It was, until the giant ping-pong-ball spaceship we had hanging from the theater's ceiling kept breaking loose and landing on the audience. The soaring costs of death-and-dismemberment insurance, plus the salary demands of the two girls undressing when the Cosmic Man peeks in, forced us to close the play on Page 4.

Agreed. I too found this film enjoyable. John Carradine was excellent as the cosmic man.
