I know it's a movie but...

...based on the real case, does anyone else think the real Leopold should have been paroled? I don't. I don't care how much good he did in prison, he should never have gotten out. What are your guys' opinions?

Well, given how this was the very definition of pre-meditation (seven months in the planning) it does make this murder even more sinister, as opposed to an irrational moment of passion type killing. So in that sense yes someone like that is sick and should never get released. However, Leopold was so young when he committed the murder and did spend 33 years in total in prison, which is a very long time. It's such a bizarre case that I think parole was justified and we know that after his release he didn't kill anyone else so it seems that was the correct decision in hindsight.

Bill, I'm interested in why you think his youth makes a difference, or why you think the case was bizarre? Or why that makes parole justifiable? Also, the actual trial transcripts are online, and they are so awful, (the comments L & L said) I wouldn't even consider parole as possible. I wonder if the parole board reads the original whole transcripts....hmmm......

I believe in the death penalty in extreme cases but also that no one should have to serve more than thirty years.

He should never have been released, who knows if he killed anyone else or not? Could have just not been caught, anyway that doesn't justify it. He didn't deserve to die a free man.
