Fantastic ending and so brutal, for the audience. After all the twists and turns in Abel's escapades we learn that he was caught and executed just like that! I think this is, as another poster suggested, very realistic and I loved the ending.
Prior to these last few seconds, after Abel dismissed the sole loyal partner-in-crime, there was a shot of the handsaw hanging on the wall with other tools. I felt sure he was going to kill himself ... he didn't but as the final naration announces his fate we see him walking blithely with others on a Parisian street. I think he wanted to be caught having lost everything.
