I've wanted for years to see CITY OF FEAR, for the sake of its music by composer Jerry Goldsmith. But film noir is nowhere near being my favorite genre, so $60 for the sake of one picture in a box set sounds stiff. Come on, TCM, I'm a subscriber now -- run this again!

That is a problem with box sets, and Sony (Columbia) makes this worse by packaging the discs "bare", i.e., not in separate slip cases, so there's much less chance any of the individual titles will come on the market privately. Still, both these sets are pretty good (though Vol. 1 is better than Vol. 2), and you should be able to find them for much less than $60. (If you don't mind the wait, Sony's sets generally show up at Costco at very steep discounts -- perhaps $40 off a set at this price -- but unfortunately not till many months after their initial releases.)

As for TCM, they often show films the month they're coming out on DVD, so perhaps they will run it in July, or at least before too long.

FYI; Intrada records released a limited 2000 copy run of the Goldsmith score last Tuesday. I have my copy on the way. The disc will most likely sell out within a couple of weeks. Classic early Goldsmith, I'm very much looking forward to it.
