I gave it a five. I'm ancient myself, so I actually saw this as a kid in the theatre.

I saw this on TV when I was about 10 years old. The scene I remember the most is when the diver is pulled out of the natural pool. Yikes!

I saw this on TV when I was a kid, too. Scared the hell out of me! I'd love to see it now. I'm sure the special effects would be hilarious!

Like most of the rest of you, I thought it was pretty good. I first saw it on KIRO, the CBS affiliate in Seattle in the early to mid 1960's. They had a program Saturday Afternoon at the Movies, where they showed old sci-fi movies. Shows such as this one, Attack of the Crab Monsters, Target Earth, The Giant Behemoth, were played among others. That was a good time to be a kid.

Three scenes stand out as seriously effective -- (1) the diver being pulled out of the pool... then his mask is taken off, revealing a bloodied skull, (2) Max's arm being treated in surgery, (3) the horrific scene where Max is consumed by the creature.

Corny, dated, even silly -- but those three scenes are among the most effective (as in chilling, scary, horrific) in the history of horror movies.

I read about one thing in the movie I hadn't noticed when I saw it when I was a kid. When the diver is pulled up out of the pool and they pull his mask off, he is still breathing. I'm not sure how that could actually have happened unless they pulled him away from the monster before it could finish him off but that made it even worse.
