Films like "Porgy and Bess", "A Raisin in the Sun", and "Imitation of Life" were given big budgets and released for mainstream consumption, and Sidney Poitier was becoming a real star, and black character actors were occasionally able to play something other than servants.
Did you know that the original Ben Hur was played by a Mexican immigrant? Yeah, back in 1925 Hollywood made a big-budget, spectacular, groundbreaking version of the story, and Judah Ben Hur was played by Ramon Navarro, who'd been born and raised in Durango, Mexico.
