one of the best war movies ever

So touch by this movie I felt ashamed that I thought all Russians were robotic like poeple. The young man in this movie could be considererd an all american boy in the Russian army. So egger to serve and help all the poeple around him. Those who love meaningful movies must see this one.

Go ahead and see The Cranes are Flying as well, and you may learn even more.

reply

I Agree this was a brilliant movie

reply

The Cranes are Flying is good, but it's too depressing. This one while being a tragedy, has a much more hopeful outlook on life.

reply

Try Come and See too.

reply

that's strange.. In Russia we think that americans are robotic. This guy is a real Russian soul! Great movie

reply

come on, we all know that Russians dont have souls. Russians give their soul to the state.

reply

Yeah, it made me wanna hug my mother and get a chick named Shura. It's the Forgotten Soldier of Russia, that's for sure.

reply

What a beautiful film, it really shows the humanity & nobility of people in the face of the devestation of war.

The way I see it, is that we weren't retreating, we were just attacking in a new direction.

reply

"The young man in this movie could be considererd an all american boy in the Russian army."

Never; he was a Soviet boy - and it shows

reply

""The young man in this movie could be considererd an all american boy in the Russian army.""

"Never; he was a Soviet boy - and it shows"

Not so. He was a human boy.

reply

Not so. He was a human boy.

As oppose to a non-human boy? WTF?

reply

I'm pretty sure the previous poster tried to underline that the boy had humane qualities wich are considered so and shared by all countries and races in the world. Because, you know, those posters above him seemed like trying to give the privilege of being more humane exclusevly to their people.

One of the best movies ever. I don't think I've ever seen a film with such human kindness and compacion for and towards people. The kid in this movie is a real hero and helps every person he meets. This film has one of my favorite scenes in history that makes me cry every the time because it shows such joy. If you're losing faith in man kind, see this film. Thank you Criterion for releasing this. I had no idea how much I would love this film forever. One of the best main characters ever too. Kindest, friendliest kid you'd ever meet, a real hero.

reply

That this film is set in the second World War is secondary to the fact it is a love story. Expertly directed and acted, it is very touching and should be on any list of 1001 films to see before you die.

reply

Agree with everybody above, wonderful, touching movie. The young couple are terrific and per imdb looks like it was first movie for both. Although I loved it I would be sad to see it again, it felt so real.

Wish TMC wouldn't put non-English movies on so late at night. Would have been nice if more people had an opportunity to watch such a good movie. Was a very fitting movie for Memorial Day, felt more truthful than the usual heroics, though he was a hero. This is a great war movie, but in the way that The Grand Illusion is a great war movie.

reply

Saw it on sunday, too. I agree that TCM puts on their foreign films too late. I remember haivng to stay up until 4 AM to watch Fanny and Alexander a few years ago.

But this is certainly a great film. Brilliant directing. The scene where he regrets leaving Shura is masterful.

Chukhrai reveals in the DVD interview that he sacked his two (quite well-known) leads at the beginning of shooting, and went to the prestigious Moscow Arts theatre to recruit two youngsters who would (he judged) be better. He encountered opposition, as you might expect, but got his way. And was right.

reply

> One of the best main characters ever too. Kindest, friendliest kid you'd ever meet, a real hero.

Yeah. Too perfect to be real.

reply

Though I would say it's an anti-war film.
And the main character could be any kid in the army during war. Chukhraj never once called him a Soviet soldier for a reason. This wasn't about the government or the politicians. It was about what we as humans lose when we lose one of us.
Gorgeous film.

One of the great "road" pictures, im my opinion, up there with It Happened One Night and Midnight Cowboy.

There, daddy, do I get a gold star?

Ballad of a Soldier is one of the most compassionate, humanistic and poetically beautiful films ever made; rarely does one get the opportunity to see a film directed with so much care and tenderness. Visually, the Soviet filmmakers understood the beauty, capabilities and magic of cinematography better than anybody - which is fully displayed in Ballad of a Soldier - never neglecting the ethereal camera effects of the '20s and '30s. As previously mentioned, this is an anti-war film, however, the film is more interested in celebrating the act of kind-hearted deeds and showcasing Russians, as individuals, to be human-beings.

It is certainly one of the finest, most enthralling movies ever made, but it's not a war movie. It's not even an "anti-war" movie. It transcends any such motif. It is a story highlighting millions of individual human struggles in a time of great cataclysm.
