What a beautiful movie

I saw this movie yesterday on IFC , it was on kind of by accident I would say...at first I just thought it was one of "those army movies" they show on or around Memorial Day and I was'nt sure if I wanted to watch another "war movie". But it caught my attention, and it held it. Both young actors were wonderful and the way the movie was shot was beautifully done. In the end, it left me feeling sad for the young soldier, even more then in the begining when the narrartor "hints" what the soldier's fate is. And it left me wondering what the fate of he young girl was too.

I highly recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys foreign films. I wish I could find more movies featuring these two actors.

i realize that it's highly regarded, but i found it so treacly, so chock full of the usual bag of soviet socialist realism tricks that i just couldn't stick it out to the end

reply

For me it's quite a universal story, could as well happen anywhere.

reply

I agree that it was a beautiful film.

Only the first 15 minutes or so. Stick through that and you get what the power of cinema is about.

I would even recommend it to people who don't watch foreign (non-English language) films, because it is universally relatable, and the form and pace are consistent with what people are used to seeing in American and British classics

Ballad of a Soldier is an excellent starting point for people who want to step off of the beaten blockbuster path, but don't want to dive right in to the stuff that's way out there

I'm proud to say my poetry is only understood by that minority which is aware.

i thought it was sappy, amateurish and too convenient

the scene in the train where they are looking at eachother was laughable, it felt like a film student project

so a random hot girl just happens to jump in to the same train he was taking, yeah right, i am willing to suspend my disbelief at alot of things in movies but that would never happen

so many movies, so little time

Interesting opinion but I think you'll find yourself in a minority of one.
Stick to gaming. . . you'll feel more st home.
