High Class B-movie. I am so disappointed.
Here I was expecting this to be another 'Robinson Crusoe on Mars,' or 'The Beast from 20000 Fathoms.' I've never been more wrong:
--The acting is too strong. Not great, but none of the delivery from the major players could be described as wooden, a common occurrence in "B-movies" of the 50s.
--Besides a three-minute scene, there aren't any needless love interests. Pathetic.
--The cinematography is lovely; the special effects, though dated, are comprehensible and well-placed, and the reveal is somewhat disturbing.
--The Plot is almost strong, and there is a noticeable absence of heavy-handed moralizing all-to-common in that staple of film.
7/10. It's no 'Forbidden Planet,' 'The Day the Earth Stood Still,' or 'The Incredible Shrinking Man,' all great films. It's not even a 'Them,' or a 'The Thing,' nor does it try to be. Decent film, but left me slightly disappointed given its low score and "so bad it's good," reputation.
It's also out on criterion.
