Kubrick's space pods inspiration?

I just watched The Atomic Submarine for the first time. I'm always searching for classic sci-fi so I'm surprised this one evaded me this long. (As a reference point I was 14 when I saw Star Wars)
My guess is this topic has been mentioned and discussed before as this movie seems to have a handful of inspirations in it. But I'll toss this observation out there and pretend I'm the very first person to notice this:
When the "Depth Explorer" mini-sub was launched at around 46:40 into the film I was amazed. For the next 1:30 I thought I was watching a mock-up for Kubrick's space pod scenes from 2001. It's not just the resemblance of the machines. The pacing and movement as well. I cobbled together a side by side comparison here: http://i1113.photobucket.com/albums/k501/JFREINKER/pods2.jpg

Again, I doubt I'm the first person to notice this. But wow. 1960? Very cool to stumble upon a movie like this.

Well? Where are all the fans of this cool movie??

This is a far late response, but I just watched AS, and picked up on that. And the way it moves towards the ship, attaching itself, like when Bowman guides it back to the Discovery.

I kept saying "2001 Space Pods"
