Did 'The Godfather' steal a scene from this movie?

The scene where Moe Greene gets shot in the eye in The Godfather is almost an exact copy of the scene where Commander Holloway shoots the alien in the eye in this movie. Did the screenwriters steal this idea?

The Godfather (1972) scene with Moe Greene getting shot in the eye is an homage to Battleship Potemkin (1925) where a woman wearing glasses is shot in the eye in the Odessa steps scene.

You must have not watched many Sci-Fi or horror movies. Every time there's a monster or alien with one eye somebody always shoots or pokes it out.
