Who "Played" Barney Quill?

I realize it's a rather stiff, paper-thin performance but seriously, there are more pictures of Barney than most characters in a movie are shown at all, and I wondered who the fellow is "playing" the single most important character never shown in person, dead on arrival, Barney Quill? He was the perfect choice as he completely embodied the 1950's era Alpha Male. Looks like a bully at a Moose Lodge.
