Steiger does Brando

Seemed he was channeling the great man here.

I've never seen this film. How is it?

reply

Pretty well lit, encapsulating Capone's story in a Disney kind of feel... I wouldn't call it great, and surely not Steiger's best stuff.. I don't know, not something I'd tell anyone to rush out and rent.

reply

I would (tell them to rush out and rent it). It's one of my favorite "guilty pleasures." Right up there with Roger Corman's "St. Valentine's Day Massacre" for pure gangster enjoyment......Jake (from the era when "gangster" still ended with an R)

Steiger and Brando both came out of the gate in 1950.

Both 'method actors.'

I often wonder who was doing whom.

Brando made perhaps 10 good films -- Steiger made at least twice as many.

reply

Well, this was a gangster movie in '59 and The Godfather came out in '72 so I think Brando was channeling Steiger.
