Eye of the Beholder

I always think it is somewhat ironic that an episode about beauty and conformity had to use a different (beautiful) actress for the unveiled Janet Tyler. I feel bad for Maxine Stuart, who played the majority of the role.

Maxine Stuart as Janet Tyler (under bandages)
Donna Douglas as Janet Tyler (unmasked)

The doctor told her they did everything humanly possible.

He doesn't look very human when they show his face,

reply

My husband has determined that the doctor, the nurse, and the others who are in charge look like relatives of Moe the Bartender on "The Simpsons."

reply

Definitely. That is who it reminded me of and I could not pinpoint it, the first time I had seen the episode.

RIO OLYMPICS!!!! August 5th!

reply

As a fan of both TZ and Simpsons I love this comparison and can immediately imagine as it would be depicted on the Simpsons ;)

One of my favorite ep

Mine too. Totally iconic TZ.

Why did they use a different actress?

I've never fooled anyone. I've let people fool themselves.

reply

Part of the ironic twist, so we are surprised when we see someone who does not match the voice.
They wanted the gravelly voice to suggest ugliness, as she talks about being ugly and not fitting in with everyone else, hence the procedure.
And then when they remove the bandages, we see Donna Douglas who was quite beautiful, but ugly in regards to the norm of the pig people.

And to the previous poster, remember this is an alien world, not earth. So there is some latitude in the types of surgical procedures/ injections that they might have developed, that are unknown to us.

reply

yes-The producers originally were going to have Maxine Stuart dub Donna Douglas's few lines after Janet Tyler was unveiled. But Donna Douglas did a decent enough job that they decided not to do that.

Totally feel for Maxine Stuart-- imagine needing a double because your face wasnt pretty enough. Wonder how her agent pitched that job to her.

I thought Maxine Stuart did a fantastic job on her role. I think she helped sell it to be the iconic episode that it is known today. 

Luke Skywalker, your Mom was hawt! Darth Vader

reply

Yes- she was remarkable. It made me want to see more things in which she performed with her real face. This was her obituary: http://articles.latimes.com/2013/jun/11/entertainment/la-et-st-maxine-stuart-actress-dies-94-20130611

This was the first episode of the TZ I ever saw. Back in the old WPIX days.

reply

Yep, I used to watch TZ religiously on WPIX TV. I remember in the 1970's it was on at 8:00, then at 11:00. It was back in the days before Channel 11 had its own TV shows and just showed syndicated old TV shows.

I watched WPIX as a kid too only back in the mid 60s and also Chiller Theatre. House on Haunted Hill was my favorite on Chiller Theatre!

reply

That brings back memories. I first saw the Twilight Zone in 1959 when it aired on Friday nights at 10pm on CBS. A funny story...we only had one tv and I wanted to watch TZ. My father wanted to watch the Friday Night Fights on NBC. I made up a story that I had to watch TZ for a homework assignment. A little fib, but he let me watch the show. I was 16 and an only child and very good at getting my way. He passed in 1990..I would give anything to know if he knew that I made up that little fib. Hey..did you also watch Zacherley? He passed this year..Svengoolie did a tribute to him.

reply

[deleted]

Funny story Maddy! I vaguely remember Zacherley, but I was born in late 1958 so it's hard to remember exactly (sorry for the late reply, I just checked my email for responses, forgot to do that last night!).

reply

Wow Zacherley died on October 27, 2016 at the age of 98! Now that I read he hosted Chiller Theatre I do remember him but only vaguely. I remember the movies on there a little better!

reply

Yeah, he was 98 when he died. He was a piece of work. He used to put himself into some scenes in the movies that were airing. There are probably some clips of him on youtube. As for the Twilight Zone...1959 was a good year for me. I was "sweet sixteen", graduated from high school, and got my first full time job...yes..it was a very good year..hard to believe so many years have passed..will be 74 next month, but my pic showing was taken on my 73rd birthday last Feb(so I can't complain) (LOL).Have a great 2017!

reply

You look great Maddy! Happy New Year to you too!

reply

Was Chiller Theater the one with that six-fingered bloody hand coming out of the ground? I'm pretty sure that was on Channel 9, WOR.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

[deleted]

It was on Channel 11 and also Channel 9 I think. Here's a discussion on it, but I haven't had a chance to read it all yet. I think the hand was in the 1970s and 1980s. I watched it in the mid 1960s (I also watched Creatures Features on Channel 5 (WNEW), but I don't really remember it):

Maybe you remember Channel 5's (WNEW-TV) "Creature Features" https://youtu.be/_4Mb60KMOJc

Channel 9 WOR had Fright Night: https://youtu.be/uU73vWzWW1s

I don't remember Ch. 5., but I do remember Fright Night. Those faces scared the p!ss out of me when I was a kid, and I quickly changed the channel. As did that bloody, six-fingered hand.

reply

I clicked the link to youtube. What was great was the video that followed..memories of WNEW channel 5. Of course, a lot of the clips they showed were from other channels..ABC, CBS. You can still see a lot of these shows on the nostalgia channels like Cozi TV. MeTV, Antenna TV. Decades, TVLand. What's scary for me is that I remember all those shows(LOL). Got my first TV in 1950( I was 7), and am still a TV Junkie.

reply

Oh yes! It's amazing that it is now possible to access almost ANYTHING you remember on TV. Or if you can't access it yourself, you can find someone in cyberspace who remembers the exact same thing!

How about this one? The 4:30 Movie on WABC Channel 11: https://youtu.be/2es-lfRSDOI (who can forget Troy Donahue Week?)

Or this one. The Million Dollar Movie on WOR TV: https://youtu.be/BPTQRmwCOWs For years, I didn't know the music came from Gone with the Wind.

Million Dollar Movie..they would show the same movie 5 days in a row. One of the movies that stuck in my mind for years was So Young, So Bad with Anne Frances and Rita Moreno(she was billed at Rosita in the movie). I looked for years to get this movie on DVD and found it years ago on EBay. Boy, did it bring back memories. And just like you, I didn't know the theme was from Gone With The Wind. I recently rewatched it(I have the boxed set). That was some movie..George Reeves(the original TV Superman) was in that movie.I'm originally from NYC...Channnel 11 was WPIX and Channel 7 was ABC.

reply

Maddy, I loved "So Young So Bad" when I was a kid. I hadn't seen it in ages (and I mean ages!). A few months ago, I had an intuition to check YouTube and...voilà! Thanks to YouTube, I enjoyed rewatching it after so many years.

reply

Maxine Stuart was great, I didn't know that was her in this episode until now!

reply

I still love it and it's on now! Marathon yay!

reply

The removal of the bandages scene was just cut (not pun intended). It was supposed to be more gradual,
but it was cut short.

Blasphemy!
