I just noticed this pronunciation in "I Sing the Body Electric." Did people commonly pronounce it this way in the late 50s, early 60s?

reply

Ha ha! We always pronounce it like this in our family (when talking to each other) because of the way Rod and others on the show always said it. We always thought it was funny. It's even more fun to pronounce it that way saying "robotics".

reply

I love robits.😀

John Dehner's character's pronunciation of that word in The Lonely struck me as most peculiar.

For the life of me,--and I go back to the Twilight Zone era, watched it when I was growing up--I've never heard that row butt pronunciation in real life, not from teachers, including science teachers; nor just out and about in the world. Not even casually or "humorously". Weird.

reply

We pronounced it "row-bot" back then, just as we do today, as in, from Forbidden Planet, "Robbie, the Row-bit." Hell, just watch Forbidden Planet. You'll hear for yourself how Americans said the word "robot" in the 50s.

Yuk yuk yuk!! YERR SOO FUNEEE

reply

Does anyone know when the current pronunciation came into vogue?
