This episode fell flat. Usually there is a decent message but this one seems to be equating being responsible with not being true to yourself. Mr. Bevis didn't pay his rent and he should have been evicted. He can like his goofy music and other eccentric things but the dude has to show his landlady and boss some respect or he will never make it. This was a clunker.
Did you watch the baseball one? That didn't make a lot of sense, either. Give a robot-man a heart and he wants to make the opposing team happy... never mind that he let down his entire team.
I thought it portrayed that material things didn't matter to Bevis. He didn't care about a place to live he didn't care about a fancy car or raise in his salary. He was happy with being himself
Yeah that's fine, except his car causes pollution and traffic problems, and he disrupted people at his job with his zither music. He has to be accommodating to others to make it, much as it can be annoying to him, and at the end he was relying on his angel to help. We all have to make allowances; I hate to pay rent myself but I know it needs to be done, as I don't have a landlady who will give me a break.
All Bevis needed to do was take his job more seriously, show up to work everyday and do his best, and make sure he paid his rent on time. He didn't have to give up being a fun and goofy guy otherwise, and he didn't have to give up the hobbies he enjoyed like building models and listening to zither music. Or even the things like sliding down bannisters and driving that funny car of his (although he should've done something about the exhaust pipe). I mean his boss and landlady liked the new Bevis better, and I agree that they are important people to stay on the right side of so you can keep your job and home. But just about everyone else liked the old Bevis better, including all the women in his office and that cute neighbor of his when he walked by her. They all preferred the old Bevis cause the new Bevis was to appear to be smug and conceited and a stuffed shirt. Anyway, he could've changed things around to where everybody liked him. It wasn't just simply black or white, strictly one or the other and nothing else.
Yes, I agree. The angel, if he was really an angel, could have told Bevis to straighten out a few things in his life (show up to work on time and pay your bills) and then pointed out that he could keep his wacky personality and that his hobbies could be enjoyed on his free time. Everybody wins.
That's exactly what I was thinking. The episode made it seem like he had to either keep his fun loving personality and be totally irresponsible (and lose his home and job in the process) or be responsible and lose all of the things he enjoyed. Why couldn't he have found a balance?
I think the idea is that one thing leads to another. It's hard to lift one thing out while continuing with everything else. And he had to find the balance himself. He needed to weigh which parts of his life were "must have" vs "get rid of." The Angel looked at everything as one big piece and changed it all.
If we look at it from a religious perspective, it's an example of free will.
