Can't handle "It's a good life!"

It makes me jump out of my skin. I am more angry at the adults for not ripping that kid's throat out than the kid himself. Especially his parents!

reply

Right! That one guy had enough guts to stand up to that little brat. His parents really should have been murdered, I can't stand them either. Lol.

reply

Yes, he was my hero. I always wonder what happens after. Did they eventually kill him as a teen or what, ha!!

reply

In the sequel episode which was on the 2002 TZ series titled It's Still a Good Life, he's an adult still living in Peajesville with his mom and daughter. She also develops the same abilities. Was a far inferior episode of course but it was nice seeing Mumy and Leachman 40 year later as well as Mumy's real life daughter.

reply

I couldn't agree more! The plan should have been to have Dan Hollis shove a nuclear missile up Anthony's backside. "You may send me to the cornfield, but not before I send your little ass straight to hell. Happy Birthday to me!" Cut to nuclear blast and fadeout.

LOL!!! Yes. And like Foxy wrote, this ep irks me, too. It's not enjoyable, it's spine tingling and so frustrating I could explode. And there's no pay off. At least in the Bad Seed, little Rhoda got punished at the end (at least in the movie version.) But, Anthony goes on and on. Why couldn't the dad AT LEAST gently disciplined him, "You know Anthony, if you wish Dan into the cornfield, his wife will be soo sad and she's a nice lady." But, he didn't even attempt to. AHHHHHHH!! Like I said, I hate the parents!

reply

The biggest problem I have with the episode is that it's nothing but a monument to cowardice.

reply

I agree also. There are ways the parents could've snuck up on the kid and thrown his llittle annoying, arrogant a** into the cornfield where he belonged. The parents had no backbone, they could've gotten rid of him. That mouthy little brat reminds me of the horrible kid in "Problem child'. Watching a show/movie with a kid with that kind of a mouth is not amusing or entertaining, it's irritating and painful to watch and hear. You're so right, him not getting a taste of his own medicine in the end just took the episode from awful to unbelievably awful.

Very overrated episode. I liked the Simpson's version of it much much better.

reply

The original short-story makes the problem clearer though. Remember that Peaksville was alone, the rest of the world having been destroyed or Peaksville having been transported to another dimension. Beyond the limits of the town there was nothing but empty void. The void might have claimed the town without Anthony. At the very least there would be no sun or weather without Anthony, meaning they would die a slow death rather than a fast one.

The hope was that they could wait until Anthony matured to a point where he could be reasoned with. To do that, they would have to stay alive, no matter what. It was a long shot, but it was the only hope they had.

reply

It's one of the scariest episodes !
Psychological terror!
Billy Mumy!

reply

The OP better not let Anthony see this thread or it's off to the cornfield for you!

reply

LOL!! You are so right. Little murderous brat will turn me into a Jack-in-the box.

reply

Little murderous brat will turn me into a Jack-in-the box.

A jack-in-the-box that still has your bad face! Ha.

This episode disturbs me in so many ways. It's nerve wracking! You can feel the tension. The adults were so dumb. Dan gave them an out and they just stood there. Duh.

I hate when Anthony wishes Bill's collie into the cornfield. Poor pup.

He's the "Trelane" of The Twilight Zone.

He's taking the knife out of the Cheese!
Do you think he wants some cheese?

reply

More like "Charlie X".

reply

I just thought I point out I also get very irritated when he screams "YOU'RE A BAD MAAN, A VERY BAD MAN!"
I avoid this episode because it raises my blood pressure because the way the adults just stand there irkes. They make the situation worst by kissing his azz, further turning him more into an irrational brat. Damn his parents.
I agree with the other poster, the guy who stands up to Anthony is also my hero but no one had his back.

reply

I couldn't agree more! The plan should have been to have Dan Hollis shove a nuclear missile up Anthony's backside. "You may send me to the cornfield, but not before I send your little ass straight to hell. Happy Birthday to me!" Cut to nuclear blast and fadeout. 

reply

And how many of them would be alive after having been vaporized and/or smashed by the blast?

reply

I would have been holding a loaded gun and say hey look at this, and have it "accidentally" go off in his direction. Oops.

reply

The biggest problem I have with the episode is that it's nothing but a monument to cowardice.

You explained it perfectly, Doug. That's it. So the question is, what's the point?

reply

For that I have no answer I'm afraid, pup. The only thing I can tell you for sure is that the short story the episode is based on is no better at all. Only very small changes were made to bring it to the screen. In the end there are still snowflakes in the hell that is Peaksville. 

reply

"Shooting Anthony was a real good thing you did. Real good."

reply

And therein lies its power. A brat with such powers is a scary idea and this episode exposes what might happen when adults become aware of how dangerous that child is and the ramifications of provoking him to anger. I mean, if the parents even *think* of disciplining or reprimanding him for his horrible behavior they could be killed or suffer in whatever ways he might desire or drum up from his sick mind. It irritates as intended because you so badly want that kid to pay for his misbehavior. But what can possibly result from even an attempt to stop him...he knows what you think immediately when you think it. Village of the Damned type stuff...

reply

Are we to assume that Anthony never sleeps? Or would detect that his food is poisoned before he tastes it?

One possibility is that they consider killing Anthony a suicide move for the whole village. If they're living in a small biosphere controlled by Anthony's mind, who knows what would happen if they kill him?

reply

That is a possibility. But I wonder if he allows them to have the freedom of free will when he's asleep. A lot of kids hate to go to sleep and if Mumy had special powers he could just will himself to stay awake as long as he wants, and to have protection from those he might consider a threat to him when he does sleep.

"The only home your family probably ever had was a ready room on a launching pad." –

reply

I assumed his dreaming mind would warn him if he were in danger while asleep (since he had telepathic powers).

reply

The thing I can't handle is the gawd awful TV show he makes them watch.
