The real Mr. Lucky

This was an old favorite from long ago. I suspect the show was inspired by a fellow named Tony Cornero, who, in the 1930s, operated two gambling ships, the Rex and the Tango, outside the three-mile limit off the coast of Southern California. An ambitious young District Attorney named Earl Warren made it his personal crusade to put Cornero out of business. One police raid on the Rex was met by crewmen with firehoses. Warren won in the end, and went on to become Attorney General and Governor of California, and later Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.

Actually, there were several ships/boats that operated outside the 3-mile limit back in those days. Some were casinos; some, during prohibition, were bars; some even served as brothels.
One casino ship was damaged in a storm and washed up on the beach of Coronado, a suburb of San Diego (where I live). It became quite an attraction for many years before it was finally cut up and hauled away.
