A stimulating show!

It is a pity that Men In space had such a short life on TV. It could have become a real classic. the episodes dealing with contact with aliens were especially good. I regrt its demise.

Was there an episode on this where the astronauts were on the moon and had a mechanical problem. One of the astronauts opens his suit to get a wrench he had inside thus killing himself but the other two were able to get back home?

I was 8 when this show was on and that's the only episode I remember clearly. The astronauts' ship crashed on the moon and they had to walk to their base. They were carrying a tank of oxygen which they were going to need but the valve wrench was inside the suit of one of them. Eventually, that fellow goes off alone and you can probably guess the rest...

WOW!!! You've got some memory! It was pretty dranatic for TV in those days and I remember being moved by the scene. I was 11 or 12. It must have been tough for an 8 year old to see.

reply

Harder for a six year old. The sight of the wrench in the gloved hand of the dead astronaut is still hard to watch.

reply

I believe the title of the episode was "A Handful of Hours."

I was ten or eleven when the show came on. I remember how pissed I was that it was cancelled. I tried to watch every episode. I remember thinking Lundigen ws cool. It was a great show for a kid to watch. Especially since the news about the Russian achievements was so depressing.

I grew up with "Men Into Space" and I have vivid memories of that episode ... right down to where the crewman remembers he has a crescent wrench which can open the oxygen bottle ... then the pause ... "inside my space suit." There was a sense of gut-level REAL-ness with Men Into Space which sticks with me, nearly 50 years later.

There's something to be said for the Willy Ley / Chelsey Bonestell vision of the future, however romantic and unrealistic it may be, and Men Into Space is a wonderful representative of that universe.

( I posted this in another category, but this probably a better place to ask - sounds like the same episode)

I was five years old in late 1959 and I loved this show. But, the only scene I can remember was that the astronauts were on a moon walk on the dark side. As they approached the sun lite side of the moon, there was a distinct line between dark and light. One man started to step into the light and anther caught him by the arm, as if to save him. The man then pulls out a cigarette and throws it into the light and it immediately burst into flames. It proved that the astronaut would have endured the same fate as the cigarette. So many errors - the gravity, the flames, the cigarette. Did I just imagine this scene?

Yes, it's too bad that this show didn't catch on with the American public at that time, and continue into 1961 when NASA launched the first Mercury space capsule. Then it could have continued a few more years.
MEN INTO SPACE owes a debt of gratitude to George Pal, for his wonderful movie DESTINATION MOON (1950), and the producers, Ivan Tors and Maurice Ziv, had already done SCIENCE FICTION THEATER in the mid-1950s, so they knew what they were doing, but should not have kept this show so low-budget. If only they had filmed it in color.
NASA should have put more into this show, and the producers should have asked NASA to help them out a lot more than they did.
Wouldn't it have been great, if there was a theatrical movie version of this TV show - MEN INTO SPACE - the movie, in color. The producers should have done it.

I remember an episode where they were stranded on some planet, and one of the crew got very sick, with a high fever.
Ice fell on the planet, from a comet.
They brought the ice in and used it on the sick guy, lowering the fever and saving his life. (Christmas Miracle)
I loved Men Into Space.

Yes, I have a poorly-done DVD set of this show, with that episode on it. They were supposedly on an asteroid.
