Possible blu-ray release?

Little House has been released - with big success - on blu-ray, so what are the chances of this classic show getting the restoration and love that it deserves? This show on blu-ray would be amazing.

Was the resolution of the earlier episodes high enough to gain an advantage over DVD? You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

I was hoping for the same thing, but I've heard the DVD sales of the latest release (season 8, I think) wasn't very good and it's getting more unlikely that CBS won't even put the later years out on DVD. The DVD restorations are very good looking except for a bunch of season 2 episodes which looked like they weren't remastered at all.

If the show was shot on film, I was also wondering if it would be possible to format it for widescreen.

reply

It was shot from start to finish on 35mm. It has over the double resolution than 1080p. So, yes it can be released on Blu-ray and look very good.

To "look right" in widescreen, a film has to be shot with widescreen in mind.

If Bonanza had been shot so it could be properly cropped to 16:9, you'd lose side information (if you chopped off the sides for broadcast), or the overall image would be "too small" for a 21" TV if you displayed the full frame.

4 years later and still not a word. This legendary show is a MUST on high def.

Apparently some episodes were released on blu-ray in Germany. Germany, but not the US!

reply

Very true. About two episodes worth. But the reason these episodes were released on blu-ray in Germany is because outside of the US, the episodes were originally released as a movie in theaters. So the german blu-ray is actually a Bonanza movie release.

Interesting.

I'd probably buy it even though I shouldn't.
