One Step Beyond - Music from Premonition

Movie girl: I love this episode and wonder if anyone can tell me the name of the waltz tune Lisa dances to toward the end when her granddaughter is getting married? She waltzes around the room years later and is unafraid of the chanedelkier...before the engagement party.

THanks! I have loved this song for a long time. Englebert Humperdick sang something similar in his movie short Les Bicylettes Bel Size in my high school days.

You know . . . I've researched this and it's very surprising to me.

The Humperdinck song was written by Les Reed and Anthony May in 1968.

And I haven't found any reference at all to their having based it on any previous music.

But CLEARLY the music is identical to the music in "Premonition" (1960).

I would have assumed that it, in turn, was based on some older piece of music.

But it appears that it was written new for this episode by Harry Lubin under the title "Waltz of Dreams".

That's what's surprising to me.

Because if it's true, then it seems that Harry Lubin would have a good copyright case against Reed, May, and Humperdinck.

Very odd . . .

Movie girl: That is odd! And to make things even more curious, I think I heard that waltz music in a movie! I cannot recall what movie it was in, either. I grew up remembering the One Step Beyond episode (I was 8 or 9 at the time I first saw it) and always admired the music. I first saw the episode in '60 when I first saw the show. Thanks for identifying the title, Waltz of Dreams. I always wondered what it was called and thought it emulated a 19th century waltz sound full of emotion. MY mom really loved it too.

When I was in high school I remembered the Humperdinck song, but forgot that it related to it. When you think about it, It starts out with a different sound, and then suddenly we have that same beautiful and haunting melody! Just recently I found this on You Tube and recalled years ago hearing that too.

I have heard of Harry Lubin somewhere and that was probably reading the One Step Beyond Companion book. Can't believe all that time has passed. Thank you for responding. I will try to get the Waltz of Dreams song. I just read that the Englebert song was in one of the first movie short of the 60's, a 20 minute film.

Best Regards,
Janet

Hi Janet . . .

I don't believe you'll find a "Waltz of Dreams" recording anywhere. I looked around for it and don't think it was ever released (although my YouTube video of the "Premonition" episode attracted a copyright notification from the music's owners).

It's not even on the supplemental "More Music from One Step Beyond" CD that was issued just last year. I'm going to contact the people who released that CD and see what they say about this odd Humperdinck discovery of mine. I tried to reach them before when I was developing my new OSB website: http://one-step-beyond.info (which has a section devoted to the music).

I'm enjoying doing research for the website. For example, I'm trying to locate the original sources for some of the story lines . . .

Thanks, Malcolm.

Hi MAlcolm, I searched and searched like you said, and I saw other songs by
Harry Lubin and Orchestra from the Paranormal and Supernatural - from OSB. And then I lucked out when I went to Englebert Humperdinck. I first listened to his lovely song again and then I saw a comment recommending Les Reed and his Orchestra for the Instrumental.. Well, the song is there under Les Byclettes, of course.

I could not find it on the supplemental music from One Step Beyond either! I think it is very nice that you are developing a neat OSB website. I have great memories of watching with big sister and our parents - it doesn't seem a long time ago, but it has wrought many changes over time. This show will always be a gem. It is among our many favorites and shared memories as sisters. We did enjoy Twilight Zone too.

But I am wondering about the Englebert Humperdinck song! IT had been quite awhile since I had heard it and suddenly on hearing it again, I realized the song we referred to is within Le Byclettes! I could not find Waltz of Dreams either.

Yes, the stories are very unusual from OSB. IT really scared me as a kid, but I grew to love it. Premonition is partly one of my favorites because of that song, oddly enough! I love the part where Lisa is waltzing alone through the ballroom and everything seems to be safe years later.

Thank you for your kindness in responding quickly. Good luck in your quest. I will certainly check out your website. IT will be interesting to see what the CD releasers of More Music from OSB have to say.

Best and Thanks Again,
Janet

Movie girl: THank you so much! I love the waltz and have always treasured that episode, Premonition. That is due to the music and poignant story. This is wonderful to have all that info. I thought it was odd that the Englebert Humperdinck song has the same melody. I was recalling it recently.

Best Regards.
