Oy Vey! One of the Worst War Pictures Made!

What were they thinking in 1958?

reply

It's an anti-war picture.

Is there a dramatic war movie that isn't?

reply

What are you thinking in 2014. It was a classic film ahead of it's time. Terrific ensemble performances and direction, great soundtrack and excellent script that although it made changes from the powerful book by Irwin Shaw did a fine job of distilling a very long and detailed story about the experiences of the three main protagonists and the weaving in and out of others in their lives.

there are many folks who do not agree with you. The end was especially bad ... Brando dead ... MC back with his baby ... anything missing??? I think it was way to long and disjointed. The film would have been much better if it just concentrated on Brando's character.

Your entitled to your opinion of course. But please don't try and cite the illusory "many folks do not agree with you" routine. Have the courage of your convictions and make your case w/o telling me about the so-called "many folks". If we're going to go down the path of what many people might think, lets use some actual facts. The book was a best seller at time, the film is highly rated on IMDB at 7.3, Rotten Tomatoes reports that 83% critics have given the film a positive review, with a rating average of 7.6/10. So much for the "many people" argument.

As per your problems with the bits that you cited, you express them as if just stating them with exclamation points makes your opinion fact. Those sound bites are meaningless, even in the context of your expressing your opinion. They are just aimless incomplete thoughts.

Christian's death was how the book ends as well. Although the path of his character in the book is very different than the more sympathetic portrayal Brando demanded in the film. MC's character actually dies in the book as well and the irony is in some part that Michael Whitaker who inly recently decides to serve in combat and is totally fearful and inexperienced in combat, only by some fluke takes out Christian who by that time is a tremendously brave and experienced war veteran. And Michael is connected to Christian via the thread of their relationship with Michael's girlfriend. The book and film are about three paths and the threads that bind them. The irony of who lives and dies and how luck can play a large role in that. There's much more.

But the bottom line is if you don't like the film, fine. You see some other ways to do it, great. But please don't lay out whats a your opinion like some silent majority believes as you do.

I thought it was OK but had to laugh at the Chermans and Brando's accent "Vot is wronk with beink a Nazi?" Really points out that problem, speak with accent, speak German with subtitles (Battle of Britain), or speak English ( Valkyrie). I prefer the subtitle method.

I think it's a great movie. My 17 yr old daughter & I watched it yesterday and we really enjoyed it. We love Monty. This was his 1st movie since his accident so we were trying to see how his face had changed.(I think it was his nose that really changed his looks) Brando & Martin were both very good in their roles although Brando's accent was all wrong.
BTW- Monty named this as his best performance on film. He named another but I cant remember. This was on the Hy Gardner show & you can see it on youtube.

I agree that this was not a very good movie. It's one of those overrated movies that got high ratings for having a grand scale, having a star cast, and being about an important subject. Plus, nowadays it also gets points for being a "classic".

One of the best war pictures ever made.
