Looking for Copy or way to view

I was taken to see this movie around 1958 or 1959 by my aunt when I was a little boy. I would really like to find a way to obtain a (legal) copy or to find a location where the movie can be viewed. If anyone can help me, please leave a message at: [email protected]

Thanks.

If anyone finds a way, kindly let me know too. Ole L J. I am also looking for the two record set for it. It was a collection of the soundtracks. I can't believe that noone has re-issued something as good as this.

See my post on the other board about the music...I copied the LP to CD...

Same here. I need a copy of this film desperately. My aging mother loved it and so do I and I'd love for her to be able to see it once more. It seems impossible to find. Keep me posted as well. Thank you.

I too remember seeing this spectacular movie as a little boy, and would love to see it again. A little web surfing turned up this info:

Windjammer (1958) was filmed in Cinemiracle, a movie format that used three separate movie cameras running simultaneously, and shown in special Cinemiracle theaters. The format was used to make only a few films, and those theaters are no longer in business.

Cinemiracle was outlived by its competitor, Cinerama, a slightly different 3-camera format. Although Cinerama, too, has long-since fallen into disuse, there are at least three operating Cinerama theaters today, one each in Los Angeles, Seattle, and Bradford, England.

Now, Cinemiracle films are close enough to the Cinerama format that they can actually be shown in Cinerama theaters (with only a slight modification to the projectors), so as far as the projection technology goes, it should be possible to see Windjammer on the big, wide screen in one of those three Cinerama theaters today.

However, the Windjammer film itself presents some problems. Two prints of Windjammer still exist, but their colors are badly faded. One print was shown in Bradford in 1997 and attendees were excited to see it for the first time in over 30 years, but the colors on the screen were faded and decidedly pink. A different print was shown in Seattle in 2003, and its color was described as being almost gone, and there was some physical damage to the film as well. In short, the existing prints are not good enough for public viewing.

Well, you say, but these are just faded prints. Let's strike a new print from the negative!

Fortunately, the negative is thought to still exist in the vaults of Cinerama, Inc. However, it was filmed in Eastmancolor, which was in widespread use in the 1950s and is nortorious for fading. It would take money and work to restore the color and make a new print, and then it could be shown only in those three existing Cinerama theaters -- so it isn't economically viable.

Windjammer was also transferred to the Cinemascope format and was widely shown, since a majority of theaters were showing Cinemascope films in the 1960s. A Cinemascope print is thought to exist in Norway, but the status of the Cinemascope negative is unknown. A restoration project to make a new Cinemascope print and show it in lots of theaters around the world makes better economic sense, but no one has stepped forward to do it.

The IMDB page shows that Windjammer isn't available in VHS or DVD. The Radich foundation in Norway (which owns and still sails the ship used in the movie) reportedly once sold VHS-PAL video cassettes of the movie, but no longer has any for sale.

A somewhat hopeful note for the future: In a few years High-Definition TV will be mainstream and High-Definition DVDs will hit the market. Wouldn't Windjammer would look great on widescreen Hi-Definition TV? That might be what it takes to do the color restoration.

In conclusion, it doesn't look like we will see the marvelous Windjammer (1958) in a theater again. Instead, save up to to buy a HDTV and a HD-DVD player, and hope Windjammer is released on HD-DVD.

Thanks to Martin Hart, of widescreenmuseum.com, for some of the information that appears here.

The Radich Foundation was willing to make a copy of their existing footage (about 20 minutes) and yes, it was in PAL format for me when I emailed them, but it cost a pretty penny. Cost to me was about five US dollars per minute of film, but considering the work I put into finding all the above info out (before it was posted so thoughtfully here on IMDB), it made a great Christmas gift for my father, who, as many of the above mentioned, saw this as a child and loved it.

Oh, and the soundtrack rocks for all you youth who doubt old movie magic.

Smiles from Tennessee.....you must be Kari....yes, I'm a fan of Windjammer, have been for years, and i have the soundtrack, scratched after years of use but still playable. 'Kari Waits For Me' is perhaps my favorite tune from the album, and i am learning it on my mandolin. Iwould be happy to tape the album (scratches and all) for you if you wish? Smiles again.... :)

I think I have a taped version of the original album. I named my daughter after Kari Waits for Me..., tho she pronounces it Carri instead of Car ee. "Kari waits for me at home.....tho I must sail the sea...."
I found a website years ago that offered trips on the Windjammer. It was actually resurrected from the sea, you know. Comes into New York on an annual trip, but if it does still, I don't know. The puter I had with all those links were on has died......
I just moved, but if I can find the tape, which I came across at one point, I need to make copies. If you're interested, lemme know.

have you found a copy of the movie?? Perhaps you can help me as I am desperately looking, too.

I am also interested in any possibility to get to see this movie. I am the great grandchild of the Captain (who played himself) of the ship. My father still has my great grandfather's invitation to the premiere of the movie, which found place at some theatre in New York. He also has the soundtrack.

I have seen Windjammer several times since it was first shown as part of the Widescreen Weekend section of the Bradford Film Festival in England in 1997. It is due to be shown again this year on March 11th.

The first time it was shown they did not charge entry as the colour is very badly faded and the print was believed to be fragile. However it was such a hit that next time it was shown they charged 2ukp, and since then they have charged full price! The print has a German? soundtrack, however there are some scenes set in one cabin where the cadets were only allowed to speak English.

Despite the faded colour it is well worth seeing if you get the chance.

I also found this site which may bring back some memories.

Saw this at Bradford on March 11th. As mentioned previously, colour has faded almost completely and film is in poor condition, but still a memorable experience. The narration on this print is indeed in German, but an English narration did exist. All the songs sung by the crew are in English.

For anyone who's keeping track, please include me if you find out anything about this film being restored and released on video/dvd.

I saw Windjammer when it was released in 1958, when I was six years old. Our local theater advertised it as being Cinemascope, which it was, but since that was a fairly new phenomenon, they were able to pull a pleasantly sneaky surprise on their audiences, as follows:

As the house-lights dimmed, we could see the curtain for the center screen part. The film started on that center screen, immediately grabbing our attention, so that we forgot that it was supposed to be wide-screen. During all the preparations for the Radich's departure, the curtains quietly uncovered the remaining two screens, so that, when you got your first look at the ship under full sail, it seemed as if you were in the middle of the ocean - and the ship was headed out of the screen straight for YOU!

BTW, it was a pleasant surprise to see the Christian Radich among the tall ships gathered for Operation Sail in 1976, for America's Bicentennial.

I also saw Windjammer as a child in Newark, NJ but I was too young to remember many details. It is possible to find the soundtrack and accompanying Windjammer book on ebay and amazon. However the film seems impossible to find in VHS. I have sent an email to the Radich foundation an hopefully I will hear from them.

Have any of the earlier posters found a copy of the movie?

This was one of my childhood favorites and I would love to own it on VHS or DVD format. I wore out my LP but found a replacement on ebay.

I've seen the Cinemiracle-Version in 1958 in Hannover (Germany) and I've got the original-soundtrack on a CBS-LP. In the early 70th I saw a copy 70mm in a cinema in Hamburg. Since that time I tried to get a Video. If somebody knows a way to get a Copy give me a message. Thank you!
I for myself try to find out which of the distributors may have contact to the owner of the copyrights. Somewhere there must be an original film-negative or master-copy to create new copies to VHS or DVD.
If anybody has contacts - please let me know. Thank you.

Hello,
My name is Jan Benschop. I am a Dutchman living in the U.S. (a citizen now), who grew up on Curacao, Netherlands Antilles in the fifties. During that time, the film Windjammer was being filmed, and the Christian Radich came to Curaçao. A feast was thrown for the crew by the only high school on the island, Peter Stuijvezandt College. My Brother Hugo and my Sister Lise, as teenagers, are preserved on some frames of the film as they cook saté for the crew.
I saw the film in Montclair, NJ in 1958, in its full glory. Never have I seen anything remotely as impressive as the Cinemiracle process. I grew up listening to the sound track. Now, I am a folk singer who opened for Peter, Paul & Mary and John Denver on some occasions in the past, and have a CD of my music out. When I do gigs wherever I am living (my wife and I live in an RV), among the songs I sing are Kari Waits For Me, and Everybody Loves Saturday Night.
I am very much interested in obtaining the three-panel copy, NTSC, English from you. Please email me back the price, and I will get payment to you for it.
By the way, how many copies do you have? My brother and sister may be interested in getting their own.
Jan Benschop

I found a copy of the original soundrack record album at Ameoba records in Hollywood. It was a single disc, no souvenir program included (have that separatley) bur in pretty good condition. Also, it only cost about five dollars. Only one at the time but if there are any used records store in your city, it may crop up somewhere. I was looking for it for years, even since seeing the movie in Seattle in 2003,and had long given up until I came across this treasure in the bargain record bin downstairs.
