reply

i have no idea but alot of his good earlier films aren't on dvd, it sucks

At this point I'll settle for a VHS tape of a midnight showing on some obscure channel. Does anyone have one to share?

I'd like to review this movie for a scholarly journal and can't find a copy, either. Any ideas?

Dear Reader:
Having just finished reading a great book, "Totch, A Life In The Everglades" written by a native of Chokoloskee (born in 1920) who spent his entire life in the Everglades and was also in the movie, I would very much get a copy of the film. Unfortunately, I can not find it in any video format. Is there a source? What has to be done to make this one-of-a-kind video happen?
Help,
David C.

It's been a year since anyone has contributed to this post, so I doubt I'll get an answer, but ... Has anyone on this thread managed to secure a copy of this film in any format?

Nicholas Ray's work is criminally under-represented on video in the USA. But this one seems impossible to find even in Europe.

reply

Cinefile Video in West L. A. has a full-screen copy made from a t.v. showing (so-so visual quality, at best).

I just spent almost $40 for a bootleg copy I managed to find on eBay. It was a gift for a friend whose father-in-law is on his deathbed and asked if there was any way he could see it again. I watched it last night and found it a solid film, full of great images and memeorable characters. Unfortunately, I failed to make a copy before handing it over. I'll check and see if I can get my hands on it again before it's gone for good.

still hoping to see the movie again...
any hope?

reply

Me too. I think I must have seen it three or four times when I was about nine - one of the local stations must have owned a print because they seemed to run it at least once a month. I'd love to see it as a grown up.

Almost 6 yrs later and I'm still waiting. Perhaps an e-mail to Plummers agent? Does anyone know who OWNS the rights to the film now?
