Legal Reprecusions

Was anyone called to task for the harm that was inflicted on the lemmings during the making of the film- if not initially, then since? I don't know if there were laws against harming animals back then, or Canadian law in general, but I'm pretty sure there would eventually be some legal debacle over this.

reply

I dont think there are even any laws against harming lemmings now.
Ok it was cruel, but who cares, theyre only rodents. Nobody would be complaing if they did it with rats.

reply

I think if it were done to rats, it very well should cause just as much of an upset as it does with the lemmings.

reply

People kill rats when they come into their houses, eat their food, and bring with them risk of disease. But to kill a whole herd of them in bulk, there is no justification.

Animals are mistreated all the time, for a variety of "reasons." How often do you see legal repercussions from that?

Nothing "legal" would have happened then, nor would anything now.

This was a one-time event. What about the baby seals that get clubbed in the head every year?

Or the animals that are mistreated much worse for the purpose of food.

I think what we're talking about here is a fine line, true..but it is known what seals are clubbed for, and how veal is made for example, and as disgusting as i think that is, at least those of us who think like me have knowledge of it and try not to buy anything that would initiate more killing.

However there is something extra obscene about this lemming situation. That is because it is done to make a documentary more interesting. Along with that, there are so many lies, *especially* for a docu, about the fact that they even live in Alberta. It feels like not only did they harm lemmings but they completely insulted our inelligence, by releasing coplete false information.
Shame on them!!

Would you classify that as a launch problem or a design problem?-Real Genius

reply

Canada has no true animal welfare laws--it hasn't updated it since the 19th century. Every time they try it gets stalled in government.

Just because they are rats, they do not deserve to be treated badly.
The seal slaughter is disgusting. Clubbing helpless infants to death for profit. The Inuit didnt start hinting seals commercially under after WW 1-using western tech.
