How times have changed
First anyone hauling hazardous material is required to stop at railroad tracks which they didn't at the beginning of the trip. Second there is no way today the states would allow truckers hauling that kind of material on dangerous back roads like that. The interstate highway system was barely in its infancy back in '58 and very little of it was built yet out west in the desert where this takes place (Interstate 40 in California wasn't opened all the way until 1972) so they didn't have much choice.
