Opening scene

James Best seems to be the only US soldier left in the German village when he approaches the train car and asks the sniper to surrender. Yet, he is seen hiding at the front door of the car and then shooting from the back door of the train car. Where did the second US soldier come from that must've been at the front side? Did he crawl underneath the box car and go both places, instead?

reply

It's James Best. He's crawled under the railroad car, in the knowledge that the German soldier will try to kill him with a pistol after claiming his rifle to be empty. It's a clever ruse to flank the German soldier, which establishes early on how canny Best's character is.

The Dunkoff fell for it, apparently both sides of the railroad car was wide open. Sloppy movie
