Filming locations ??

Having last seen this on British TV back in the Eighty's I was pleased when it appeared today on TCM in the USA.

I would really like to find the filming locations. The large areas of "bombed" city could, I suppose be somewhere like Manchester or Glasgow that suffered heavy bombing, but surely by 1958 much had been cleared and much new building was taking place?

The clever use of genuine newsreel shots (from Wermacht sources) adds to the overall look of the film, I wondered if the "autobahn was a stretch of newly built but not opened motorway?

Was ANY filmed in Europe? Anybody that knows help me out!!!
