Johnny Crale's metal right hand

At the beginning of the film it's flagged as an important weapon, character trait, and possible weakness/Achilles' Heel, but it's never mentioned again and plays no role in any action. What's up with that? I don't rate Terror in a Texas Town highly in any case, but this felt like classic sloppiness perhaps traceable to the film's 'made fast and cheap' production.
