Wow! A soul mate! It's not junk they waste much of the DVD manufacturing facilities on, but JUNK. Believe me when I say I have searched heaven and earth for some copy. I checked E-Bay (of course) for any copy, even the catalogues for VCD's in the Philipines. I did find a copy of "The Ballad of Lucy Whipple" starring Glenn Close and Jena Malone (1999), Combia-Tristar VCD, never released in the USA, but no luck with "Tempest". Naturally, I checked the on-line catalogue of Video Search of Miami, where I found some un-released (in USA) Jane Fonda French films, but alas no van Heflin as Pugachov, Catherine the Great's nemesis. Now I would be the first to admit "Tempest" is not anywhere near the superb Sergei Bondarchuk'a "War and Peace", [now lovingly restored from the original 70mm, 6 track, Sovietscope negatives and lovingly released (for the 2nd time) on DVD, this time in widescreen, and as a 5-disc boxed set], but (darn) I love that film ever since I saw it in my late teens in a theater, and later owned the Laserdisc pan-and-scan version. This film deals with one of the great events of Russian history, the massive Pugachov Revolt, which nearly unseated Catherine the Great. Naturally, she won (with her fine German generals) but it sure scared her out of her liberal agrarian and social reform mode, to affirm the autocracy of the Empress of all Russias. Okey, okay! I know some of the dialogue is a bit (?) cheesy, and some of the characters are not fully formed, but that doesn't seem to make the film any worse than what comes out of Hollywood right now (i.e. The War of the Worlds (2005), which, despite its 150 million cost, clearly shows where the 20 or so screenplaylets where spliced together). I firmly believe that the film gods (in heaven?) will hear our pleas (and the gnashing of teeth, and renting of clothing) and cause a fully restored print (in 2.35:1 Technirama) to be digitally transfered to DVD and released with lots of extras, or (hell!) just released!

Hi,
I have a video copy of "The Tempest" because many years ago, it was shown on local t.v. over night and I taped it. Unfortunately it was full of commercials and the reels were out of sequence. Using 2 VCRs, I was able to get it in order and take the commercials out. What I have is a pretty good copy.....and I have never seen it advertised for sale anywhere.
Regards,
Joyce

This is years after the above notes, but I also saw Tempest in the theater when it was releaeed, and absolutely loved it, and went back several more times. Not a DVD, but I just today saw that it is available on Netflix streaming. I'm going to settle down and enjoy.

...the print appears to have been 'mastered' (if one can call it that) from a somewhat faded, panned-&-scanned television print; it's also dubbed in English, although given the multi-national cast I'm not sure that seeing it in, say, Italian with English subtitles would be preferable (q.v. Visconti's "The Leopard").

On the one hand, the presentation is not ideal; but, on the other, at least now this terrific, underrated film is (somewhat) more widely available to viewers.

Now if only they'd do a proper restoration on DVD and Blu-Ray in anamorphic widescreen, with multiple language options...

I have 2 versions of this classic. The English language versions runs for 2 hours (ntsc) and is from a fullscreen American tv broadcast, whilst the Italian edition is from a lbx tv broadcast on RaiDue again running for around 2 hours (pal). Both appear to have been screened around the early 1990's.
