Strasburg's acting

Susan Strasburg's performance is among my top 5 "most annoying performances by an actress" category. I fail to see how anyone can possibly not cringe when watching her over wrought, over acted, unbelievable performance. At her best, she is a person whose acting is apparent... not real! I would suspect that this was an embarrassing experience for everyone connected with the film, which may be why it isn't on DVD.

Most of the people involved are dead or demented anyway :)

But I wholeheartedly agree, the acting was cringeworthy, and I'm not sure I want to see any more of her movies now.

She was pretty, I'll give her that!

She was playing it as required. The girl is using every acting trick in the book to get someone to give her a chance. Yes she's theatrical but as the Romeo and Juliet part proves she can really act. Yes at times it was a bit over the top but it's supposed to be.

It is my business to protect your majesty.... against all things.

I was wondering if she was deliberately dreadful to reflect the inexperience of her character? but I think she was simply aping K.Hepburn in MORNING GLORY (1933), whatever it's a bit of a joke.

I agree about the inexperience bit

I saw no problems in Strasburg's performance. She conveyed her character as one filled with naivety and optimism, which was needed.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.

A very risky role for a young actress to take on since it has left such a negative impression of her acting talent.

I just seen the film and yeah she was woeful, really over the top.

Her voice was the same annoying tone throughout.

Joan Greenwood was brilliant!

There is no truth, however, to the vicious rumor that when Strasburg played the title role in "The Diary of Anne Frank" on Broadway, irate audience members would shout — toward the end of the play as the Nazis approached — "She's in the attic! You can't miss her! She's in the attic!"

That anecdote was actually about a later summer stock production and the actress the angry audience wanted to see marched off the the camps was Pia Zadora.
