This movie is Proof... (MST3K)

Tom Servo: It's Mr. Baldo!
You: Hey quiet down, I'm trying to watch this!

I just watched this movie (at least the MST3K verison of it, heh). I love MST3K to death, but this movie proves that you should only MSTify dumb movies, and not compelling ones.

Not all movies were made to be MSTified.

I'm an MST3K fan, too, but this movie (and several others) were much too good to be razed by the guys on the Satillite of Love.

I wish Paramount would release a good DVD of this movie. I've loved the damn thing for almost 50 years!

I agree. This was one of the first episodes I have seen where I was watching and realized I was actually interested in the plot! It was still a decent episode with funny lines, but this movie is certainly one of the least deserved MSTings the show has done.

reply

Sorry, but this was a dull, shallow movie with Mr. Drysdale and the Professor in it, perfect fodder for Mike and the 'bots. Plus it had Uncle Fester from the Munsters. Cheap Hollywood stuff, thanks MST3K for making me laugh, and cry.

"Torgo, you're the laziest man on Mars!"

reply

trickymutha, your post is proof...

That you haven't even got a single clue! It must be really sad.

You come into a topic where everyone (MST3K Fans, even!!) is pretty much in agreement, and in graceful ignorance inform us all that we are completely and collectively wrong, and you of course are fully correct, citing only the observation that the film casted certain actors from highly successful television programmes?

Not that it really matters, but do you really think the producers of this film sat down and said "Well gee, let's make this film really REALLY suck by putting The Professor and Uncle Fester in it, heh heh, yuk yuk yuk!"??

Here's a little something that might assist that embarassingly low I.Q. of yours: This film came out WAY BEFORE Gilligan's Island and The Munsters were even an idea in someone's head!!

Dull? Shallow?? Do you even know the meaning of those words? Here's a hint, well at least with the "shallow" bit: It's the type of person you see everytime you gaze into a clean and polished mirror! Your post is invalid, and not only that, but in a completely irrelavant and unwanted way!

I don't mind hearing from an opposing viewpoint and all, but only if the author knows what the hell he's talking about, and not from some clueless cretin who excretes little turds of irrelavance all over the internet simply because he gets wierd freakish pleasures watching himself argue just for the sake of arguing!

Hmm, yup that was a flame.

Quit beating around the bush and tell trickymutha what you REALLY think of him! You don't have to sugarcoat it the way you did! He can take it!

On a more serious note, I think the difference of opinion between trickymutha and you (and me) could be understood better simply by asking that individual how old he is. In my experience, the people who respect and admire "The Space Children" are the ones who were young enough to have seen it when it was first released. I'm pretty sure that trickymutha is still a tad green.

Wow, DHX, what's with the hostility? Did you assist in the making of this film or something? Trickymutha is not collectively wrong, he is simply stating an opinion. No one is right or wrong. Maybe he didn't have the facts straight about what the actors were in first (TV show vs. the movie) but lighten up. You are pretty hostile, that much is clear. You think it must be sad to be him, I think it must be sad to be you, writing some huge post like this going on and on about how sad and stupid someone is for having an opinion over a silly movie.

I am a diehard MSTie, and I do not think that this is one of the worst movies ever, nor do I think it is one of the worst movies the bots have riffed and I do think it is a funny episode but not one with a very high re-watch value. Ultimately it was worthy of riffing--most movies are in my opinion. Yeah the movie actually does have an decent story, but so what? The criteria for an MST episode is not "must have no interesting story." Loosen the elastic band in your undies and calm down.

I just thought i'd put in now, that while Jackie coogan was in an episode of the Munsters, Uncle Fester is from The Addams Family. Now i will also say DHX was way out of line being so rude about it. I thought trickymutha made a fair comment about the film, and he didn't just go THIS SUCKS!!11

I am a pretty diehard Mistie but i also thought this film was boring and shallow. In fact i agree exactly what trickymutha said, and to be honest it was so bad that even the bots seemed to have a hard time making it interesting. I hope this opinion doesn't offend you also.

DHX- it's always happy hour somewhere- let's get together in Scottsdale or wherever, apparently you're a Space Children fan-a couple of drinks by the pool and we'll be the best of friends, and agree to disagree.

reply

As a die-hard fan of "The Space Children" for the last 49 years -- (jeez, I'm I really that old? Let me check. Yep, I am.) -- I'd like to express my appreciation for your offer to "agree to disagree".

Hell's bells, "The Space Children" might be my favorite movie of all time, but it's not my religion or anything!

Now that we've got that settled and were all relaxing with drinks around the pool -- did the rest of guys notice that blond in the bikini over there? Doesn't she look like an interesting and intelligent person? (Okay, which of us has the nerve to go talk to her? I volunteer DHX. He's the most outspoken of us.)

I liked Space children quite a bit. I liked the story and, perhaps even more, the mood of the film.

I don't really have a problem with MST3K razzing good films. They can raz 2001 if they want! that wouldn't change the fact that it's a masterpiece!
Spike Jones used to make the silliest versions of great classical masterpieces all the time. He truly loved those very same pieces of music.

I think the only problem is that in the openings of the show, they make it clear that the presented movies are cheesy, thus, indicating if a movie is satirized on their show, it must be bad. Just watch MST3K to see them do their thing (which they've always done well) and don't worry if said movie is really good or bad. If they did a really great movie like The Time Machine or Forbidden Planet, I bet it would still be VERY funny! If you look at Twilight Zones Definitive Edition you can see a clip from The Jack Benny Show in which Rod Serling himself pokes fun at The Twilight Zone. It's fun to watch.

I did notice that Blond over there, and by golly she's coming over to our table. Maybe she'll bring her hot friend with her- I understand she likes to talk about movies too.

Any movie can be riffed. It has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the movie, but the quality of the riffers. RiffTrax has done Harry Potter and The Matrix, both arguably decent quality, but the riffing is still spot on. Most people automatically assume that just because a film gets the MST treatment means that they get trashed beginning to end on the quality of the film itself, but MST3K is more about noticing unusual moments that seem to allude to another pop culture reference (from any of the past dozen or so decades) that when juxtaposed creates a gag that wasn't there before. I'd say 75-80% of the jokes have nothing to do with the quality of the movie (except the truly abysmal ones, like Francis Coleman, Ed Wood, etc.). All these people who take it personally that MST did "The Space Children" and "This Island Earth" are just a little too sensitive to be watching such an iconoclastic endeavor as Mystery Science Theater. Mike, Joel, and the bots could lay into "Gone With the Wind" if they wanted to, they could just never afford the rights.
Anyway, its just a show, you should really just relax.

Shannon

Well said, subtlenuance79. but I still find it unfortunate that there are some MST3K fans who assume that all movies shown are bad(of course this is partly due to the fact that the original premise of the show was Clayton Forrester and TV's Frank trying to find the worst movies to make Joel watch, which was the whole reason Joel was on the Satellite of Love in the first place), and judge the movies from only seeing them on the show, and not watching them minus the 'riffing'.

Gone With The Wind(even if they could afford the rights, and even if the movie wasn't long)would never have been shown on MST3K, it and other films that are considered classics just aren't the type of films that would have fit the show.

Hey, this guy's not gonna leak all over my ice cream, is he?

There's a reason it has a 2.2 rating on IMDb, and that reason is MST3K.

You had me at "meat tornado."

reply

Maybe not Andy Warhol's Empire or that Catcher in the Rye video of just a solid blue image for over an hour. But yes if the movie has characters, images, dialogue, sets etc., it can be riffed upon.

reply

this was a pretty bad one... the writing in particular was memorably worse than most mst3k movies.

reply

While i agree with the general notion that not all movies would fit MST3K material, this one definitely does.

There is no movie too good for MST3k.
Because of the MST3K I can't watch any black and white movies and tv shows (like Twilight Zone) without hoping to hear some funny from Crow and Crew...lol
