I admit that I am naive, but I'm still going to ask my question. Does the film imply that Cable and Liat had sex? Other people have talked about them on other threads but I can't find a direct answer. Do we just assume that or is there other evidence?
You are naive. I think the answer is obvious, a red blooded man in such an intimate situation with a gorgeous beautiful girl...........what would you do in such a circumstance.
Jeanne, Gloria, Toby, Mitzi, Eleanor(2), Frances, Deborah, Marion - are adorable - I love them all.
Bloody Mary says that they should 'make love' ...............but saying "make love" in those bygone days, maybe meant something completely different to what it means these days ? .........(in 20's and 30's movies, making love DID mean something completly different, something much more innocent).
But the implication is that native women have different sexual mores. Besides, in "compensation" for Cable's untimely death, the audience needs to be reassured that he had reached paradise.
"But the implication is that native women have different sexual mores." In those islands, yes, it is. And in those days it was a given. But Mary was pushing for an American husband for her son-in-law. And that was before Indonesia became a Muslim country. Nowadays, Liat would be stoned to death for even being in the same room with Joe Cable.
I don't see it as "compensation" at all, but I have a male viewpoint. To me it shows that Cable was all too ready to take advantage of the poor native girl, have his way with her, maybe leave her pregnant, and then do the Yankee two-step back home to his "Philadelia girl," who was not about to give him any without the ring on her finger.
I saw the whole show as a piece of musical propaganda against racism, with the Madame Butterfly theme thrown in for good measure.
They did make love but back in the day"sex" was mostly implied rather than shown implicitly as in movies today. You are not naive just used to today's movies.
In the book Cable took her virginity then dumped her as he was too racist too have her as his wife. He offered his watch as compensation; Mary threw it back at him. Cable died at the heads of the enemy later on.
Yes, the implication is that they have sex. Cable is obviously under the impression that Liat has been "procured" for him by Mary. That's why he's so shocked when Liat tells him that Mary is her mother.
