Unless you're Italian, longest 106 minutes ever.

See DIVORCE ITALIAN STYLE instead (also from Criterion, also with Marcello). THAT is edgier and more consistent.

Subplot after subplot in this as if those characters/actors are SO worth delving into...the photography/directing are creative, though.

I don't know what american people would make out of this film... to me (I'm Italian, though) this is one of the finest Italian movies ever. I showed it to an American friend of mine, he enjoyed it too... but he could understand Italian.

Actually I'm American and I quite liked it! Found it very funny...I was laughing out loud!
If you found it very silly, you were supposed to it's a farce. Not a spoof by the way, but a farce--there is a difference.

Great, Classic Comedy. 10/10.

See also The great War a masterfull black comedy, Try to watch this war film without laughing. I dare you! Monicelli is a cinema legend, he spent the last 60 years telling Italy's sad stories with a smile. He is the father of Italian comedy.

I'm not american.. not italian.. and i LOVED THIS MOVIE...!

Funny as hell.. american comedians should LEARN from this..

We sure need more comedies like this one these days..

I found this movie quite funny, but not in a laugh out loud sense. It's more the pleasure one gets from watching a train wreck, seeing all the crooks' plans going to hell blunder after blunder, and back luck after bad luck.

This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.

I love these old Italian movies. Granted its not the best but it is very good.

My only complaint was the subtitles in this movie. I had to keep hitting pause because some lasted less than a second. One went by so fast ( 1/10 th. of a sec.) I couldn't hit the pause button fast enough.

Just weighing in here (this thread is ancient) because I didn't want to start a new conversation. I'm American and I adored this film. I love farce, and this was a brilliant one. The moment when they finally break through the wall and it's revealed to be the kitchen is one of the most laugh-out-loud funny moments I've seen in a long, long time. I've been around the block a few times, and finding a comedy gem like this that I've missed all these years makes me remarkably happy. Sorry the OP didn't get anything out of it, but that's why there's chocolate and vanilla, as they say.

Oh, purplepines, I'm sure you meant to say "unless you have a sense of humor, it's the longest 106 min. ever," right? How can anyone--Italian, American, Antarctican, New Guinea bushman, or whatever--not like his wonderful film? Off the top of my head, I can't recall another Italian film that made me laugh so hard. The characters are funny: a boxer who can't take a punch, a young man who can't concentrate on the heist for his fondness of women, the great Marcello Mastrianni as a dimwit who's always carrying around a crying baby, and so on. And there is a very young, very lovely Claudia Cardinale among other pretty women in the cast. No, this is a delightful movie to this American--a southerner no less. Anyone halfway curious should give it a try. I smiled throughout and laughed out loud often.
