How is Jean related? SOLVED

I missed the beginning and can't figure out the relationship among the three principals. They all have the same last name. He is Candy's stepfather, so she might use his name. But who is Jean?

I guess it's like looking at clouds. You see one thing and I see another. Peace.

She's like a governess.

It's Saks! There's a reason why Winona stole from there.Their stuff is gorgeous!

No, she is helping with Candy, now that the mother is dead, but she has the same last name as Jacques and Candy. Has to be related to him.

No she was traveling with her from the begining. They arrived at the house early and her mother was already dead but her mother was expecting them. I think they made a mistake on the names because Candy told the officer her last name was Brown. Duval is her stepfather. Jean's last name was just mentioned. It's Edwards.

So who is Jacques Duval?

In the 74-minute version recently shown on TCM, the character played by Van Eyck is referred to as Paul Decker, Paul, and Monsieur Decker. The character spoke with a German accent, presumably van Eyck’s natural voice. His plan for the perfect murder involves crossing the border into France with his own passport to establish an alibi. There was no need for him to use an alias, and no mention in the film of him using any other name.

So who is Jacques Duval?
