The politics of the Singing, Ringing Tree

You know that the dwarf spies on the Bear and the Princess. Maybe that makes the dwarf = the Stasi (East German Secret Police.) DEFA studio had a bunch of their films suppressed. I'm thinking maybe this story is some sort of parable. But then, the handsome Prince turns into a bear which is, of course, the totem animal of Russia. But then again, the Princess is only redeemed when she learns the principals of Socialism - she carries a thousand loads of rubble (which she dumps in the pond!)
