Shirley MacLaine's Other Western

besides this one was of course the great 1970 movie Two Mules for Sister Sara which she co-starred with Clint Eastwood. The movie takes place in the 1860s in Mexico and Shirley MacLaine is in sympathy with Benito Juarez and his fight against the french. Eastwood is an opportunist who rescues Sister Sara (MacLaine) at the start of the movie. The catch is that being a nun is a disguise for Sister Sara which is revealed to the audience early in the movie but not to Eastwood until late in the movie. This makes the movie more humorous but it does have pleanty of action for western fans and is a good movie.

Shirley MacLaine co-starred in another movie called The Matchmaker with Shirley Booth (very good in this movie) and Anthony Perkins. I think it is set in the west in the 1890s but it doesn't really qualify as a western in my opinion. Also it has been many years since I have seen this movie so some of my analysis could be wrong but I remember Shirley Booth was great in it. It was made in 1958 and was one of MacLaine's earlier movies.

The Matchmaker is set in Yonkers and New York City. Great flick with lots of asides to the audience.

Yes, The Matchmaker was indeed set in Yonkers and New York City. The great Thornton Wilder wrote the play on which this movie was based.

I love that movie 2 mules for sister sara!!!!

One of the most entertaining clint eastwood westerns.

Shirley rules in my opinion. I am glad I taped the sheepman off of TCM.

The Truth is out there.

"The Matchmaker" was later turned into "Hello, Dolly" with music and dancing and Barbra Streisand in the Dolly role (Shirley Booth's role in "The Matchmaker")
