Where did this title come from?

Where did the title "Stranger with a Gun" come from? As a lifelong American native fan of Westerns, the fact that this is the first time I've ever encountered this title is significant. Unless I am sadly mistaken (and I don't believe I am), Brian Garfield's 1982 book on Western movies did not mention this title. "The Sheepman" is listed as "original title" and don't IMDb rules require that to be the primary title? I'll wait for discussion here before I submit the change.

Without me (maybe someone else) submitting the title change via Updates, it is now "The Sheepman." Point resolved. Thanks to whomever is responsible.

I noticed this was going to be on TCM and could not believe the title. How could you market a movie with as bad a title as that? If it it a comedy, maybe that's OK.
