Question about the ending-SPOILER

I was wondering what people thought happened afterwards. Does he go back to New York with Ann or stay at the hotel with Ms. Cooper?

reply

I think its obvious that he went back to New York. I hated it, but what I went to sleep last night thinking: "How stupid can you be."

BTW: my favorite part of the movie: the set.

reply

I know! I was really hoping he'd stay at the hotel. At least Sybil and the Major get a chance for happiness.

I don't think it's definitive one way or the other, but it's obvious that Miss Cooper will have nothing more to do with him romantically. And it's also obvious that Mrs. Shankland knows she's a very rapidly aging beauty, and John knows he will therefore be better treated by her and will thus treat her better. They're both a couple of worn-out and defeated people who now actually fit and need each other, so they won't be a mismatch anymore.
. . . . . . . .

Beautifully and correctly stated. It is nice to read posts from people that actually GET the movie, once in a while. They did say (John and Ann), at the end of the movie "we don't really have much hope, do we" in an accepting, slightly amused tone, which makes one be certain that they gave in to fate/their love and gave each other one last/real chance.
