Don Rickles/Cookies

I am shocked to see that no one has mentioned, at least that I can find, Don Rickles and the line; "ooh you win a cookie". He used this in his comedy routines in the late 60's...

I visited the WW 2 Fleet Sub in Mobile AL, next to the USS Alabama, I jumped down the hatch, ran thru the sub from bow to wardroom, and sat down at the mess table, a little kid was there with his Granddad, who was wearing a hat indicating he was a WW 2 sub vet. I could not resist, I said to the kid; "ooh, you win a cookie...". Granddad said with missing a second; "Don Rickles, Run Silent Run Deep...". I was impressed with this quick reply....

I was in the Army, so some sub vet will have to explain that line to me, ie: Was it a big deal to get a cookie or were they only handed out by the cook as a reward??

Didn't he say this in "Kelly's Heroes"?

Idthompson77: Yes, and he said it often as part of his stand up routine as well...I never did get the deal with this....

In his act he'll say about someone, "So I gave him a cookie and he went away"

Wendi is a complete waste of braincells. She is one of the freaked out nutcase conspiracy jobbers that thinks the moon landings were faked among other things.

She actually thinks there were no blacks on the navy during WW2 despite people like Dorie Miller at Pearl Harbor, The Tuskegee Airmen, Master Chief Carl Brashear, and other notables.

I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!

CG: Sorry to hear that, since CT believers are suffering from a defined psychosis, I hope she gets treatment for it....

These lines uttered by Rickles, such as "You win a cookie" or "Here, have a cookie" aren't rooted in any sort of military tradition. It is simply Don Rickles and his brand of back-handed, put-down humor! He's always deflating other people with his barbs. Let's say you've just done something brilliant or fantastic. Well, Don Rickles would say to you: "Wow, that's great. Here, have a cookie." Which is sort of like complimenting you on your great deed, and yet at the same time, giving you a treat that you normally would give to a small child. Sort of a comical way of saying he's impressed, but... he's not gonna' let you get too big-headed.

I guess it's not just Don Rickles, heck we all do it from time to time, in various ways. Like when you see someone with a new and perhaps fancy car, you might say something like, "Wow, nice car. When are you gonna' buy new clothes to go with it??"

So anyway, I wouldn't try to attach any sort of actual military tradition to
Rickles offering people a cookie. lol
