Bunko Straits
Was there a real location known as Bunko Straits or was it fiction for the book/movie?

Japan consists of four main islands. Hokkaido to the north and Kyushu to the south. Between them is the main (and largest) island of Honshu. The fourth island is Shikoku and is tucked in close along Honshu's southeastern coast. Between Honshu and Shikoku is the Japanese Inland Sea.
The Bungo Suido (suido is Japanese for strait) is the southern entrance to the inland sea and Kii Suido is the northern entrance.
The Bungo Suido lies between Shikoku and Kyushu.

My dad served as an Electronic Technician on a 143-ft sea-going tug in the Pacific and was in Tokyo Bay the day after the surrender was signed.
He later traveled to Shanghai, China and Korea - among other places as indicated/ dated on his 1944 map of the Pacific Ocean.
I even have a copy of his shellback summons/ subpoena and card as well as his 1944 Naval Bluejackets Manual!
